Is the Co-Op closing just a coincidence?

November 14, 2011

Stop press

It seems that there was some misinformation. The reporter from the News did some digging the other day and phoned me. The leaseholders are private and Co-op claim it is because the store is not doing well enough. Apologies for any excited revolutionary activity.

However, the reporter, and myself, are still very suspicious. The Tesco is about to open, the Co-op closes. It seems that the Tesco would be responsible in some way. I imagine Co-op looked at the long term prognosis and said, "we'll never compete."

I think it odd that:

1) the Co-Op always seems busy (everyone acknowledges that) so I cannot see that it is not doing well enough
2) the Tesco is coincidentally just about to open.
3) the staff-member at the co-op who I spoke to seemed to think otherwise

Put it this way, if the Tesco wasn't about to open, would the Co-Op have closed?

A list about Tesco from here: http://brightgreenscotland.org/index.php/2011/04/10-facts-about-tesco/

1) 1 in every 7 pounds spent in the UK in 2007 was spent in Tesco

2) Tesco use their monopoly power to squeeze farmers hard. A Competition Commission investigation revealed that Tesco consistently pay suppliers nearly 4% below the average price paid by other retailers. There isn’t much evidence they pass these savings to consumers – they just pocket the profits.

3) Research by ActionAid found workers in Costa Rica producing bananas for export to all major UK supermarkets earning 33p an hour.  This wage is so low that they cannot afford to take an hour off when dangerous pesticides are being sprayed on the crops.

4) Unite the Union have a long running campaign against Tesco over the terrible treatment of workers in their meat supply chain.

5) The New Economics Foundation have shown that fresh fruit and veg is, on average, 30% cheaper at a street market than it is in a supermarket. However, through short term aggressive pricing when they first move into an area, Tesco often shuts down these markets, reducing access to fresh fruit and veg for the poorest.

6) Tesco offer their best deals in out of town shopping centres rather than their city centre stores. This not only encourages driving, but also excludes those without cars – mostly, poorer people.

7) In the 5 years to 2002, an average of 50 local food shops were lost in the UK every week, largely due to the Tesco takeover.

8 ) Tesco is Europe’s biggest property company. In 2007 they were sitting on property assets worth £28bn.

9) Tesco are not a net creator of jobs. Because they aggressively force local shops out of business, and then provide the minimal possible service to customers, on average, every time a large supermarket opens, 276 jobs are lost.

10) Between 2003 and 2007 the Labour Party accepted donations of £54,194 from Tesco.

New information on Co-Op closure

November 14, 2011
Apologies fro the delay in getting this post up. It seems that there was some misinformation flying about on the Co-Op closure (it was lucky that in my letter to the Council I was careful to include phrases like "If this is the case" etc).

Please find below an email from the Co-Op and then one from the council (although no one seems to be able to spell my name):

Dear Mr. Pierce,

Further to your recent enquiry, please find below our statement regarding the closure of the store in West Street, Fa...

Tesco Built - Council Raise Co-Op Rent - Co-Op Closes - Tesco Wins

November 9, 2011
The disgusting news came about today that the Council are raising the rents to the Co-Op on West Street in Fareham. And they are not negotiating the terms.

Rather bloody convenient since the Council gave the go ahead to build a Tesco 50m down the road and it is almost finished.

Even more convenient that I tried to disapprove of the planning at consultation stage and was told I would have to turn up to the meeting at 10.30 in the morning on a Tuesday (or similar) - impossible for a teacher. Not ...

Gosport and Fareham transit route ready early next year

The bus route under construction

A £20m rapid bus transit route in Hampshire will be completed early next year, the county council has confirmed.

The Bus Rapid Transit scheme will link Gosport to Fareham along a disused railway line and is being funded by a government grant and the council.

Campaigners against the scheme say it will have a devastating impact on wildlife and have tried to stop it.

Planting and acoustic fencing has been installed on the route to reduce the...

Peak oil: 'Nothing to worry about' – but Labour knew the real facts

Were official warnings brushed aside by ministers or was the government knowingly misleading the public?

In public, the last government shrugged off the prospect of peak oil. In private, we know now that it had a different view.

Mapping fruit trees in Fareham

May 25, 2011
We have discussed this before and the idea resurfaced tonight with Nicola, who had her first taste of Green Drinks tonight - let's create a map of all the fruit trees on public land in Fareham. As Mickey pointed out, you can use Google Maps and have a public map that people can access as a group.

What think we?

Locking nuts and stolen water butts...

May 15, 2011
Today was another good day at the community garden. However, the council, or someone, had replaced the normal nut on the metal fence with a locking nut which was particularly un-community spirited... Secondly, someone has nicked out water butt, which was actually doing a good job. Again, very un-spirited. They must have had quite a job doing so as it was half-full, had a rock in it, and needed to be taken over a big fence.

Grrr.

Otherwise, all good. Lots of new plants in, and we are slowly cov...
